Denis Villeneuve wants to make three movies out of Frank Herbert’s Dune series. He already did the first one and is working on the second, which will be followed by a third called Dune Messiah, based on Herbert’s sequel.
Even though Herbert wrote more Dune books, Villeneuve says he plans for Dune Messiah to be his last Dune movie. He mentioned this in an interview with Time magazine.
Last year, Villeneuve said in an interview with Empire magazine that making a trilogy would be his dream. It seems he’s sticking to that plan.
Villeneuve thinks the third movie will conclude the series because after the second book, he feels the story gets more complicated.
But even if Villeneuve stops at three, Warner Bros. might continue the franchise if they want. There are lots of Dune books, including six by Herbert himself and many more by his son Brian and Kevin J. Anderson. They cover prequels, wrap-up novels, and extra stories. This means there’s even more material than what Amazon had for The Lord of the Rings TV show.
