FreshPaper
Kavita Shukla has invented FreshPaper, a low-cost, compostable paper infused with Indian spices. The paper helps keep food fresh naturally and for a longer time by preventing bacteria and fungal growth. Shukla, who lives in Maryland, USA, was inspired by her grandmother’s homemade spice concoction. FreshPaper retails in regional chains and independent retailers in nearly 35 countries.
Career Journey
Kavita’s passion for organic food preservation began when she was 12 years old. While on vacation at her grandmother’s house in India, she accidentally drank tap water that was known to be contaminated with harmful substances. Her grandmother immediately gave her a glass of a strange drink called ‘Herbal Potion’, which prevented her from getting sick. Upon returning to the US, Kavita examined the ingredients of the potion and found that the water her grandmother gave her was laced with fenugreek seeds, which had antimicrobial properties. She later invented a wrapping paper infused with fenugreek seeds, which effectively preserves food products from harmful microbes. This idea later became the basis for her invention and the development of FreshPaper.
In 2010, Shukla founded Fenugreen with the aim of having a positive impact on global health and reducing food waste. The company’s flagship product, FreshPaper, has since gained international recognition and is now used by millions of households, farmers, and food banks worldwide. Shukla’s dedication to sustainable solutions has helped empower individuals and communities by providing access to affordable and safe food preservation methods.
